ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY

The importance of family:
· Mildred D Taylor wanted to show a family united in love and respect.
· Mama and Papa teach their children (Mama covers the books and Papa doesn’t shop at the Wallace store)
· Firm discipline (Papa beats children for going to the Wallace store)
· Parents listen and give advice (Papa advises Cassie about Lillian Jean Simms and Stacey about Jeremy, Mama tells Cassie about racism)
· Both parents actively promote education (Mama supervises homework and Papa buys his children books for Christmas)
· Parents are caring and supportive of each other (when Mama looses her job and when Papa gets injured)
· Extended family – Big Ma adds to stability of environment to increase awareness of family history.
· Uncle Hammer makes the sacrifice of selling his car to make sure the mortgage is paid.
