robert the bruce

Edward the II wanted control of Scotland, so he sent one of his men, Sir Walter
Mowbray, to challenge Robert the Bruce for control of Scotland. Edward Bruce, Robert’s
brother, accepted a private challenge from Mowbray. It was a foolish thing to do because
he had to face Robert the Bruce. Edward had become frustrated because he couldn’t take
Stirling castle by force. So Edward was forced to lay siege on the castle, trying to starve
the Mowbray’s army into submitting to him. The challenge was that if by a year from the
day, (June 24th 1314) the garrison hadn’t been rescued in battle, then Sir Walter would
give up the castle freely to Bruce. The two men had promised not to tell the churches
about the deal because the church would not allow it happen. Robert was very angry at
his brother about this deal. During this time, Robert the Bruce decided to go and train his
men and take over the English castles, because he did not think they would win the
