Robert Louis Stevenson: Style of Writing

Robert Louis Stevenson in the novel Treasure Island allows the readers to experience the adventure, betrayal, and greed of the characters through the vivid imagery. As a verbal representation of sensory experience, imagery dominates its control over the plot and proves to be evident within the setting and characters.
At the beginning of the book, Stevenson provides the antagonist, John Silver, good qualities, making the reader assume Silver is the protagonist. Stevenson describes Silver by saying; “He was very tall and strong, with a face as big as a ham- plain and pail, but intelligent and smiling.” This makes the reader believe that the author and narrator approve of this character. Stevenson also expresses Silver though syntax by placing the dash positioning emphasis on “plain…and smiling”, allowing the reader to have a visual details of the character.
