The Function The function of the respiratory system is to exchange gases between the blood and the external environment. Oxygen is taken in and transferred to the blood, which carries it to the body tissues. Carbon dioxide, the waste gas of cell metabolism, is removed from the blood and transferred to the environment. Some excess water is also removed from the respiratory system. 2. General Description The lungs are the principal respiratory organs of the human body. A system of passage ways connects the lungs to the outside air and permits air to enter the lungs and waste gases to leave.
