Human Respiration

A. Human Respiratory System
1. The Function
The function of the respiratory system is to exchange
gases between the blood and the external environment.
Oxygen is taken in and transferred to the blood, which
carries it to the body tissues. Carbon dioxide, the waste
gas of cell metabolism, is removed from the blood and
transferred to the environment. Some excess water is also
removed from the respiratory system.
2. General Description
The lungs are the principal respiratory organs of the
human body. A system of passage ways connects the lungs
to the outside air and permits air to enter the lungs and
waste gases to leave. The sequence of passageways is the
nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and
alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs.
