He stated earlier that children should be taught of brought up by the city than by their biological parents and that men and women with the same abilities should receive the same training and education and do the same work. We see that the others present are not happy with how Socrates answered regarding these subjects. Though Socrates seems hesitant to enter into this discussion, I think he is prepared to answer it. Socrates seems to be in control of this situation regarding this, I see him getting the others to justify themselves for asking him to go deeper into women and children. He wants to make sure that if he does make a false statement, that he is free of any wrong doing. They all agree to this, so the discussion (or argument) starts.
