History of Iraq

In 1968 the Ba’th Party gained power through a revolution. The first leader was Ahmad Hassan al Bakr. In 1979 al Bakr relinquished his power and Saddam Hussein took over and is still in power today. The Ba’th Party hasn’t always been a success. After Arif took Dictatorship control in 1963 the Ba’th Party were forced underground and made changes to leadership. This is how al Bakr became leader and became leader of the Regional Command. With al Bakr at the top of the Ba’th Party their regime had a major conflict in 1972 with the Iraqi Communist Party. With the Kurdish Democratic Party lurching the Kurdish War began. However in 1979 Saddam’s continues efforts to assist the Ba’th Party won him the power of the Party and was soon president of Iraq.

Today Iraq is a Dictatorship and is very different to other Democratic systems.
