I went to Greensboro on November 1st to see the matinee performance of “Rent”. I had a really good seat that enabled me to get detailed descriptions of the set, lighting and costumes. This was the first time I had ever seen a musical and was really impressed by all the work that went into the production.
The first thing I will discuss is the set, designed by Paul Clay. The play takes place in America at the end of the millenium (which is a song that is sung during the performance), at an industrial loft that is the top floor of what used to be a publishing factory. The set was quite minimalistic and consisted of a grey-blue outdoor façade of a building. In the center was a sideways stairwell that lead up to a balcony. There was a door camoflauge...
