Renaissance

Without the support of patrons, many of the advances in science and art would not have been possible and none of the beautiful paintings, statues and buildings would have been produced. Patrons were usually wealthy signori, church leaders, powerful guilds and merchants and they provided employment for hundreds of artists, sculptors and painters (Wood: 1993; 22-23).
