Comparing Matthew and Mark
In Matthew’s gospel, the story about the man with the withered hand is located in chapter 12:9-14, and in the gospel of Mark, the story is situated in chapter 3:1-6.
In the gospel of Mark, he tells the story beginning with Jesus entering the synagogue again, and upon his arrival he meets this man with the withered hand. The others were just watching Jesus to see if he would cure the man because of the Sabbath, and if he did they would accuse him. He spoke to the man telling him, “Come forward.” Then he turns to the others and asks them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save life or kill.” The men were silent, and he looked around at them with anger and sad that they had hardness in their heart. He then told the man to stretch out his hand. As soon as he did this, his hand was restored. That day the Pharisees went out and immediately started conspiring with the Herodians on how to destroy him.
