Rape is an extreme but too common example of distorted sexuality. This act is condemned by society not because it is sexual but because it is essentially violent, brutal, dehumanizing, and altogether harmful. Rape is so harmful because it is a violent act that robs the victim of her or his rights and dignity as a human being. Rape causes physical harm through power and sexual domination, as well as emotional harm. Rape frequently leaves long-term emotional scars that damage the victim’s capacity for trusting, intimate relationships.
