Throughout the Victorian era, Catholics, were routinely discriminated against.

In 1829, the ‘Catholic emancipation act’ was passed, which allowed Catholics to participate in British Parliament. This was thought to have been influenced largely by happenings in Ireland, in which the Catholics were growing tired of discrimination, and rumors of revolution were circulating.
