Red Hills and Cotton

In Ben Robertson’s memoir “Red Hills and Cotton: An Upcountry Memory” he describes what it was like growing up in South Carolina and his love for the state. Throughout the book, he describes numerous things that make the state of South Carolina a great one. However, Robertson also spends quite a bit of time expressing his thoughts on problems and down falls that South Carolinian’s have. Although there are many themes throughout one main thesis is that the region often places blame for problems they have faced on the fact that they lost the most important battle in American history; the civil war.
The loss of the civil war was a major blow to Southern societies, and a huge blow to South Carolina. The state was probably the most involved in the civil war, because it was the first to succeed from the union and the majority of confederate soldiers were from South Carolina.
