Reconstruction

Reconstruction is defined in the textbook as, post Civil War policies whereby the

freedomen, abolitionists, and radical Republican politicians hoped to make changes in the

South that would ensure political equality for the freedomen and grant them greater

economic rights. In actuality, this is not what it had accomplished. After the assassination

of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson took over the Presidency and established his own

set of regulations for the Reconstruction. His plan was to offer amnesty to some, not all,

of the Southerners, and in return they had to honor the Constitution. The exceptions to the
