Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery is an early intervention program designed by Marie M. Clay in New Zealand in the 1960's. It was, and still is, used to assist first grade children who are having difficulty learning to read and write. Children eligible for this program are identified by their classroom teacher as the lowest in their class in reading. Children who are not taking on reading and writing through regular instruction receive a short-term, individually designed program of instruction that allows them to succeed before they enter a cycle of failure. Reading Recovery is designed to move children that are in the bottom of their class reading wise to an average reading ability in a short period of time. The goal is to have children “catch up” to their peers in reading.
