RE Council of Nicea

Question: Outline the events, which led to the council of Nicea, especially the controversy surrounding the heresy of Arianism, and explain the impact of the Nicean Creed on the future direction of the church.

When Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, and introduced the Edict of Milan in 313, he started, the end of the persecutions of the Christian Church. Later in 323, he defeated Emperor Licinius and took possession of the East. Thus, the persecution of the Christian Church finally ended, and for the first time, it seemed they were all living in peace and prosperity. However, another problem arose within the Christian Church. A view made by the Church, said “God can show himself in any of the three ways, reminiscent of the Trinity, but not at the same time”. Arian a presbyter disagreed with this statement and with his followers; they all questioned the divinity and the relationship between God and Jesus.
