algae must live in or near a source of water
algae vary in size, shape, and color. Some species are unicellular, other species form colonies, and other species are multicellular.
Algae show many different adaptations to life in water. Unlike land plants, most algae lack a system of internal tubes to move water and nutrients from one part of the plant to another. Since algae live in water, they do not need protection from drying out or stem like structures to keep them upright.
Algae contain accessory pigments in addition to different forms of chlorophyll. These pigments give algae their color. Scientists group algae on the basis of the chlorophyll's and pigments they contain, as well as the form in which they store food.
