Ramses

Introduction
Ramses II is considered arguably the most famous Egyptian pharaoh of them all. He was extraordinary during his own time, and has remained legendary throughout classical antiquity.

Ramses II was born about 1303 B.C. in the Eastern Nile Delta. From ancient documents, the portrait of Ramses that emerges is complex and multifaceted. Born to privilege, probably in the late 14th century, he was blessed with exceptional longevity, was spouse and lover of the most beautiful woman of his time, and fathered close to some 100 children.

He is known today by the majestic temples and colossal monuments that still rise above the Nile; proclaiming, as they have for more than 3,000 years, the greatness of Ramses II, "Son of Ra", the sun god and the warrior king of Egypt. He is known as well by more modern traditions that seek to identify him as the unnamed Pharaoh of the Exodus.
