Race can be defined as a vast group of people loosely bound together by socially significant elements of their ancestry. Race is neither an essence nor an illusion, but rather an ongoing, contradictory, self-reinforcing process. One’s race can affect their personal identity such as their education, success, power, and self-esteem. This paper will discuss these factors as well as my own personal views on which one I see as the most important factor.
Racial identity is a part of one's personal identity, which is itself a product of the way one mentally organizes all of his or her conditions and experiences into a sense of self. While identity forms and changes throughout life, the late pre-teens and teens form the most active period of identity formation. Early experiences, while not consciously considered, probably have the greatest impact on one's core sense of identity.
