Question: Write about the Functions of the Inspector in the play “An Inspector Calls” Comment on the play as a text for performance and as a whole.

In the play An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley the inspector takes charge massively upon the characters. Sometimes Inspector Goole just pops up now and then from out of nowhere, this seems very ghostly and ghoul like, hence his last name. This is a pun. The Inspector also seems to know a lot about the history of the Birling family. It is as if he watches over them like a god. We don’t know who the inspector is, but have been given hints because of his behaviour towards the characters; He could be a Hallucination because it is late and they have been drinking. Or maybe they have an unclear conscience because they secretly know what they have done.
When the Inspector starts questioning Mr Birling, no-body thinks a big deal, being sacked from a factory job. So as the Inspector interrogated Mr Birling, the other characters had no idea of what was to come next. When the inspector tells them the name: Eva Smith none of them have a clue who she was because she had changed her name twice a...
