Question: What do you suppose underlies the apparent need to tell stories, given that storytelling is practiced in every culture?
Stith Thompson’s article discussed duties of the storyteller as well as societies involvement in storytelling. Along the same line the definition for story or folk tales was given. The term folktale Thompson stated was too broad to “completely separate written and oral traditions”. The oral story is one passed on by word of mouth becoming something to tell an audience. For the most part, an oral story doesn’t stray from its original intention. On the other hand the written tale is traditionally written and recopied. In this essay I will further discuss Thompson’s article. Secondly through examples I will answer why story telling is enriched in our culture. The three examples outlined in this essay are education, self-promotion, and entertainment value.
