Quest For Immortality
Throughout the history of the world, man’s obsession has been the quest for immortality. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, a man explores the possibility of physical immortality, and inadvertently obtains spiritual perpetuity.
The epic begins with Gilgamesh, the great, powerful king seeking immortality through the fertility of young virgins promised to others. He lives life to its fullest, taking everything in excess. His people cry out to the gods for help, and the gods send Enkidu, Gilgamesh’s only worthy adversary. They fight and gain each other’s respect and become best of friends.
Gilgamesh is very similar to man in his pursuit of everlasting life. Much like Gilgamesh, man ravages all he comes in contact with. He abuses life and seeks glory through excess.
As Gilgamesh soon finds out, immortality cannot be obtained through a life of excess and earthly pleasures, for his friend and companion, Enkidu, dies. Enkidu was a great...
