Punishment in The Scarlet Letter

Many sins were committed in “The Scarlet Letter” but not all of them were punished for. Many characters did not get what they deserved, at least not what the Puritans would have considered punishment. Some did get punished such as Hester Prynne. Sometimes not getting punished at all hurts you more such as in Dimmsdale’s case. Moreover, it can even cause you to be in pain every day you are not found out. For some characters such as Roger Chillingsworth, this is not true as he enjoys his crime more then anything. Generally, I will talk about these three characters and what they did, and what they received.
Hester Prynne was obviously punished in a number of ways for committing adultery. Firstly and mostly was the dreadful scarlet A that burned so very hot. “It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humans, and enclosing her in a sphere by herself”.
