Pulitzer Prize Photography

Capturing History on Film
On Sunday September 28, 2003 I was lucky enough to experience the United States’ most comprehensive display of Pulitzer-prize winning photographs. It featured a total of 101 black, white and color photos from the 1940 through 2001. The exhibit was on NC State’s campus in the D. H. Hill Library and at no cost to the patron of the show. I felt that the exhibit was powerful and mind stimulating. It consisted of well- known photographs such as the Lee Harvey Oswald’s assassination photo along with images that were never really given a chance to be shown to the world. While spending three hours at the D. H. Hill Library, I read all of the write-ups next to the photos and three of the images stood out in my mind by the end.
There was an image titled “Tragedy by the Sea” taken in 1955 that made an impact on me and left me asking questions. The photograph had a young couple standing alone on Hermosa Beach, CA. The man was holding his wife ...
