Protestant Work Ethic

Since the dawn of civilization, man has always had an interest in physical activity, and competition. Over the years the interest has remained the same, but the purpose has changed drastically, into what we know today as sports. The definition of the word sport is a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports have evolved overtime from leisure activities into, in some cases, the most lucrative professions in the world. As we trace the evolution of sports from colonial times to the Victorian Era we must take many things into consideration. Ethnicity, religion, society, and the respective cultures embodied in each society must be looked at. So let’s start at the beginning of colonial times, early 1600’s.
