Able to describe longitudinal and transverse waves in media

State the meaning of amplitude, frequency, wavelength and period, including their units.

Recall the definition of a wave.

Remember and use the wave equation:
V=f x y
And know the size of kHz and MHz.

Be able to use the equation:
F=1/T
To be able to apply the equations to a range of different types of wave e.g. sound.

Understand the principle of diffraction and draw diagrams to illustrate diffraction effects. Understand the factors that affect the degree of diffraction.

Waves and the Earth



Understand how transverse and longitudinal waves can be used to provide evidence for the Earths layered structure: crust, mantle, outer (liquid) core, inner core.



Remember that the lithosphere (outermost layer) is made of plates in motion and plate tectonic processes result in the formation, deterioration and recycling of rocks.
