Prohibition

The Prohibition Act was a failure. It did nothing to stop the alcohol consumption in America. All it did was increase crime in America’s bigger cities. And add to the problems it was made to stop.
The idea of Prohibition grew with the creation of the Anti-Saloon league. It was a women’s group against alcohol. They marched from their churches to the saloons were alcohol was served to paying customers. Their protest eventually got more and more notice. With more notice came more followers. (LiGuardia). Soon enough their efforts were nationally known. Then the government got involved.
The Prohibition Act came into effect on January 16, 1920. All personal time of drinking and being social stopped. The thought was that alcohol was root of all the problems of society. The government thought by reducing alcohol drinking it would reduce the crime, murder and poverty rates that were increasing. Many bad things happened because of Prohibition.
