Pride, The Destroyer of Man

C.M Bowra describes “Oedipus the King” as a story that shows the destruction of a man by the gods. C.M Bowra proclaims that the gods can display their powers, and at times these gods can destroys man’s life just because they can. Oedipus life was destroyed not because of his character or his judgment, but because of his lack of modesty in the times of success. The gods wanted to bring a lesson to man, to show modesty in times of success. This is what Bowra believes the story of Oedipus the King is about. I find this to be a fitting comment on the story. I agree, but I believe it was a mixture of his lack of modesty, and inability to except the truth that really lay with in him. Pride and ignorance made him a man blinded to the truth, which leads to his own self destruction.
When Oedipus masters the great Sphinx, who was plaguing the city of Thebes, he lifts the terror away from the city. His fame of freeing the city of Thebes brings Oedipus ...
