Pride in the Crucible


Pride, what is it about pride? Wars have been fought over it, whole cities have been burned to the ground, vast empire have been wiped off the face of the earth; all because a few people had too much pride to step aside. Pride, though usually strong, in some cases does come in extremes. This is where one can be caught between a rock and a hard place by their own excessive pride. A good example of excessive pride is in the play “The Crucible”. This play is about a group of girls that, instead of being caught dancing, blame others for their actions. This causes the town of Salem to go crazy looking for the work of witches. A lot of good people are accused of being witches and those who have too much pride to confess, because of this lie, are killed because of it. Pride is evident in three of the main characters; Reverend Hale, Elizabeth Proctor, and most distinct in the character of John Proctor.
