The Author and His/Her Times: Jane Austen was born in 1775. Jane was the seventh child of eight in her family, and the second girl. Her father was George Austen (1731-1805); he was from an old Yorkshire family famous for making fine woolens. Jane was interested in human behavior; the six finished novels that she wrote were Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey. The books have been printed into twenty-nine languages, converted into plays and films. Lived with her parents in villages so small that were rarely known. Jane never married, possessed no money, owned no land, and did not come from a noble, titled family.
