The boastful, selfish, mercurial Petruchio is one of the most difficult character in the play “The taming of the shrew” to decipher, and our interpretation of the play changes dramatically depending on our perception of his actions. As one of the main characters of the play, it is interesting to analyse the techniques and style that Shakespeare uses to present Petruchio to an audience. Petruchio is represented as loveable rouge, engaging in slapstick humour with his servants, and also a social conscious, honest human being.
