Practical assessment on:What affects the amount of copper purified through electrolysis?

AIM:

The aim is to find out how current will affect the amount of copper through purification.

PREDICTION:

I think that more copper will purify when the amount of current that goes through the electrode increases. I think this because the first law of electrolysis shows that any amount of substance that is produced at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the amount of electricity passed through the electrolyte. The equation is:

W „f QƒÌ Q = I „e t
ƒÌ W „f I „e t
Therefore, W = Z „e I „e t

W= weight of substance (the anode sludge)
Z= the constant
I= current strength in amps
T= time in seconds
Q= charge

From this I have decided that the more current and time there is, the more current and time there is, the more copper is produced. Also the constant stays the same even if the current and time changes.

APPARATUS:

„h Beaker
„h Copper sulphate
„h Two electrodes
„h Power pack (D.C), with ammeter
„h Wires
