Reading the plays Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen, and Equus by Peter Shaffer has described a lot regarding the main characters in each of the plays. There are many similar attributes that they have, such as, they both follow the Greek tragedy by building their characters to a high point in the play and then at the end completely dysfunction. They also carry many obvious contrasting differences such as their statuses in society. Knowing that the two characters compare throughout the play, there are a few similarities and differences that I would like to discuss. The most evident similarity between Hedda and Alan is the fact that they both are under the control of an external force or by someone else, and they both would like to be free and be the one in control. Hedda is in control by the society that she lives in, and Alan would like to break free from his father’s verbal abuse and control from his God, Equus.
