Experiment to find the same salute potential of
Potato cells



Aim


To find the solute potential of potato cell sap by using osmosis and measuring the change in density of the solution.

Apparatus


Fresh Potato
Narrow Cork borer
Knife or scalpel
16 Test Tubes (8 wide, 8 narrow)
4 test tube stands
1 dropping pipette
Neutral red food colorant (dye)
Sucrose solutions of the following molar concentrations: 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0

Hypothesis


I hypothesis that the hypertonic solution will cause the fluid from the potato to disperse into the solution, this in turn will make the solution less dense and cause the dye solute to fall.

The hypotonic solution will fill the potato discs, when the dye solute is placed into the corresponding solute this will cause the dye solute to rise. This in turn will make the solution denser.
