During the 1930,s the British population was faced with mass unemployment, poor living conditions and a lack of social security. Following this time of hardship the British government made proposals to remedy these problems.

Key figurehead to welfare state: Beveridge

During 1942 a man called Beveridge published a report. This report focused on the general living conditions of people in Britain. In this report Beveridge made recommendations outlining how to improve the standard of living throughout Britain. These recommendations became the basis for what we now refer to as the welfare state.
