As a member of the welfare rights group I am concerned about many of the proposals in Governor Pataki’s welfare reform plan. I feel that his welfare reform plan will not completely help bring poverty to an end. I feel that the plan should include equal cash assistance to welfare recipient families. I also feel that the plan should include monetary support to bring families above the poverty line. Most importantly, I feel that the plan should include some guidelines on job-training opportunities, because this would be the most effective way to bring people out of poverty.
The proposal to make progressive cuts in a family’s cash assistance over the five year eligibility period is not a good proposal to solve poverty problems. The proposal specifically consists of a 10 percent cut after 18 months, a 5 percent cut in the second year, and 15 percent more every year thereafter up to a total cut of 45 percent in year four.
