February 5, 2003 seven astronauts lost their lives in the space shuttle Columbia. As it came upon landing near the conclusion of its 16-day mission, the shuttle exploded into pieces of hot metal and toxic litter across hundreds of miles of Texas, Louisiana and other surrounding territories.
Among those lives lost in this explosion was Lt. Col Michael P. Anderson, who was 43 years old and one of few black astronauts involved in the NASA space program. Lt. Anderson was born in Plattsburg, New York on Christmas day in 1959. He...
