Poetry Focus: The Lady of Shalott and La Belle Dame Sans Merci

The Lady of Shalott and La Belle Dame Sans Merci, both describe differing aspects of a common theme. The poems differ in degree, as suggested, by how each main character’s situation, in the finality of the poem, turn out. In the poem Lady of Shalott the poet describes the ladies first and final experience- to directly look out at the world- or to be more precise-to directly look out at a hansom knight, and how this unrequited love caused her to lose everything she had including her life. In respect to this poem, La Belle Dame Sans Merci also describes unrequited love, but instead of a conclusion of death- the main character, a knight, is left in sorrow, helplessness and depression. This is one main point in which the two poems differ. The knight managed to escape with his life, but not with the love he had intended to have.
