Pocket Pals

Have you ever considered buying an exotic pet to liven up your life, well consider these tiny creatures. These little critters are from the genus Petaurus Breviceps, commonly known as the Sugar or Honey glider, and sometimes even “pocket pals” (Oakes 1). Sugar gliders derived from the high treetops in Australia, but also have been deported from Indonesia and New Guinea. People all over the world have fallen in love with these “gliding possums” (Oakes 1), because of their intelligence, bonds to their owners, and their social behaviors. This last characteristic can sometimes make the Sugar glider a difficult pet. In captivity gliders can live up to 15 years.
Generally, gliders are gray with bushy tails and black stripes running down their backs. Their bellies are usually cream. A nocturnal species, sugar gliders only come out at night and early morning to eat, breed, and play. Large eyes are needed to distinguish shadows and figures in the darkness.
