During my junior year in college, I traveled to Sub-Sahara Africa where I spent five months studying various aspects of the Swahili culture on the coast of Kenya. As an economics major, I was interested in obtaining a better understanding of the economic limitations of a third world country. The program focused on learning about Swahili life, language, and culture through firsthand experiences. By living with families and becoming intimately involved with everyday life, I became more aware of the social struggles and economic difficulties of the Muslim culture that populated the coastline.
