Plato’s Phaedo
The soul is perhaps one of the most controversial aspects in one’s life. People have always asked questions like: Does it exist? Is it immortal? Is it something that is separate from the body? Is reincarnation real? Numerous people have tried to answer this question and two of the most logical thinkers, Plato and Socrates, have tried to find a way to explain this. In the Phaedo, Plato tells of how Socrates defends the souls existence, and its immortality.
There has always been a question in many people’s lives about the morality of suicide. Socrates’ defends the immorality of suicide when he explains that, “it is gods who care for us, and for the gods we human beings are among their belongings… if one of your belongings were to kill itself, without your signifying that you wanted it to die, wouldn’t you be vexed with it, and punish it…” (Plato 6-7). In this we can understand that we are the “belongings” of the gods, or the God. ...
