IINTRODUCTION Fighter Aircraft, fast, highly maneuverable military aircraft designed to destroy enemy aircraft. Fighters are generally the fastest combat aircraft flown, with speeds of at least twice the speed of sound. They are flown from both land bases and aircraft carriers. Fighters are generally small relative to other military aircraft. An American F-16 Fighting Falcon, a standard U.S. fighter, is about 14.5 m (47.5 ft) long and can weigh 14,980 kg (33,000 lb) at takeoff. In comparison, an American B-52 Stratofortress bomber is over three times as long at 48 m (157 ft) and can weigh over 221,000 kg (488,000 lb) at takeoff. Fighters are heavily armed and are built with high structural strength to withstand the tremendous stress they undergo while fighting enemy aircraft. Modern jet fighters are built primarily out of aluminum and titanium.
