Picnic at Hanging Rock – Film Analysis
Peter Weir’s film, “Picnic at Hanging Rock” utilises a variety of film techniques to create a masterpiece movie based on Joan Lindsay’s novel. The film is a creation of haunting mystery, in which extremely effective use of music and sound portray the tense atmosphere and help characterise some characters. Exaggerated camera angles and extreme shots bring excitement to the film and convey ideas, which are not directly presented. The rock itself is filmed in detailed, and made to feel quite overpowering through special camera shots and help of music. The film is one free of plot and lacking of a final explanation, existing in the viewer’s mind as an experience, as if the viewer was one of the girls who had picnicked at Hanging Rock and returned safely. Questions are posed and never answered. Thus the story of 20 schoolgirls in a Victorian age, celebrating St. Valentines Day is presented.
