Physical Expressions and Gestures

Facial expressions and gestures can show and tell a lot about a person’s feelings or intentions. Talking on the phone or especially writing an email is about the least effective way to communicate one’s opinion or thoughts because the two people cannot see how the other person is reacting physically. One could be deceptive to the other by faking his/her tone of voice on the phone by making everything sound okay when it is not or vice versa. In contrast, when talking to a person face to face, he/she cannot hide any feelings that are uncontrollable. He/she may show emotion by crying, show anger by throwing things, etc. The absence of a person’s physical being when engaged in a conversation can lead to confusion of meaning and severity of the situation.
