Oscar Gustave Rejlander was born in 1813 and died in 1875. He was a Swedish painter who studied painting in Italy. He gave up painting in 1853, thanks to the inspiration of one of Fox Talbot’s assistants. This led him to portray his art through photography. His most famous photograph called “The Two Ways of Life” was very much criticized because of the nudity involved. Even though paintings consisted of nudity, through photographs it was seen as being ‘too much’. It wasn’t until Queen Victoria purchased a copy for her husband, that the photograph seemed respectable.
