Phonological memory mediates language learning?

The current view of the working memory is that one of its subparts, the articulatory loop, comprises of a phonological store and an articulatory rehearsal process. Information can be stored on the phonological store either auditory or by subvocal rehearsal. Phonological representations are believed to fade after 2seconds unless it is invigorated by rehearsal (Baddeley, 1986). Vallar and Baddeley (1984) examined a case study on PV, a patient with an enormously defective auditorally verbal span but normal speech, and managed to pinpoint the functional locus of the deficit. PV’s comprehension deficits were consistent with the concept of a phonological short-term store as described ni the working memory model.
