Phone Conversation

The most evident personification of outside power is in the phone conversations that occur through out Act I and Act II, and, in this instance, the evidence is two fold - both in the physical ringing of the phone and the ensuing dialogue. The ringing of the phone continually interrupts John and Carol's discussion, typically at an extremely important juncture or during a rather progressive dialogue, thus a seemingly blatant illustration of how outside forces shape and changes the direction of these two characters. Moreover, the dialogue that takes place between John and the caller strongly implicates John as having a desire to conform to the force of power, which is, again, not a personification of Academia or intellectual power but simple the authority and strength of Mass Society, everything outside of John and Carol...
