Society today expects companies, especially multinationals, to return more than just exceptional results and marketplace success. Today, companies must do more than just obey the law, but also act in ways that are consistent with society's sense of what is right. They must be connected to and positively contribute to the societies where they operate. Philip Morris International produces and markets some of the world's most popular cigarettes, including Camel, a well-known brand. We recognize that they manufacture and market a product that is addictive and causes serious diseases, and that there is intense scrutiny of what they do and of the way they do it.
To think whether Philip Morris’s product is socially responsible, we have to first understand the term of societal responsibility.
