PHILIPPINE BILINGUAL EDUCATION RESEARCH AND ITS DIRECTIONS


Researches on bilingualism and bilingual education have been hindered by the lack of definitions on the terms related to the implementation of bilingual education. A bilingual is one who possesses a language skill in two languages. A balanced bilingual is one who is equally able to understand, speak, read, and write in two or more languages. Pseudo-bilinguals are those who are more familiar with their native language than with their second language. Compound bilinguals are those who translate from one language through another. Coordinate bilinguals are those who maintain a separate language system for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
