A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN is an individual who, under the direct supervision and control of a pharmacist, performs packaging, manipulative, repetitive, or other non-discretionary tasks related to the processing of a prescription in a licensed pharmacy, but excludes all functions restricted to a registered pharmacist. To work as a pharmacy technician in California, you must possess and keep current registration as a pharmacy technician. It takes approximately six weeks to issue a pharmacy technician permit after submission of a complete application package. The board will notify you if it needs additional information. Effective January 1, 2000, an applicant for registration as a pharmacy technician must be a high school graduate or possess a general education development (GED) equivalent AND meet one of the qualification methods (described below).
