personal statement

The Bottom is a mostly black community. It’s located in the hills of the mostly white community of Medallion, Ohio. Some whites want to make the land a golf course. Shadrack is probably the most strangest person in the community. He is a veteran of WWI, and goes around the town telling the townspeople to plan the day of their death without thinking about dying naturally. He proclaimed a National Suicide Day. The town learns to tolerate him.
The families of Nel and Sula are compared in the novel. Nel’s mother, Helene, grows up in The Bottom because her mother was a prostitute. She raises Nel to be like her. Nel turns out good, but doesn’t want to grow up to be like her mother. Her home was stable. Sula’s family is different. She lives with her mother and grandmother, whom are both loose. Their house also serves as a home for several boarders and three young boys. Even though Nel and Sula differ in backgrounds and personalities, they manage to become best friends. Sula shares ...
